Filly Victoria wins prestigious Epsom Derby
Undefeated filly Victoria captured the imagination of racing fans around the world when she won Saturday's prestigious Epsom Derby, one of the most prestigious races in Europe.
Filly Victoria was the favorite to win the race and she did not disappoint, crossing the finish line a length ahead of her nearest rival. This was her fourth consecutive victory and she is now considered one of the top contenders for next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Victoria's trainer, Simon Dow, was understandably ecstatic after the race. "She has an amazing constitution and she just loves to race," he said. "This is a great win for her and for British racing."
Owner Darryn Lineker was also thrilled with his filly's victory. "I can't believe it, she has done so well," he said. "She is a superstar and I can't wait to see what she does next."
The Epsom Derby is run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs and is open to horses aged three years or older. The prize money for the race is in excess of £1 million, making it one of the richest races in Europe.
Filly Triple Crown winner in the making?
For a moment, it looked as if she was headed for trouble. She got bumped around at the start of the race, and then had to weave through traffic in the stretch. But in the end, it was all for naught.
The favorite held off her challengers to win the race by a neck, setting herself up nicely for a chance at history.
Can she do it? Can she become the first filly in 36 years to win the Triple Crown?
It's certainly within reach. The next leg of the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes, and she's already been installed as the early favorite.
If she can win that race, then all eyes will be on her at the Belmont Stakes. No one has ever won all three races of the Triple Crown, but this filly just might have what it takes.
Some skeptics are already writing her off, saying that she's too inexperienced and that this is just a fluke. But don't count her out just yet. This filly has proven that she can compete against the best of them.
Historic Filly win at Belmont Stakes
On Saturday, the Belmont Stakes was host to an exciting race with a historic outcome. For the first time ever, a filly won the prestigious event, with favored jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. at the reins.
While there were plenty of heart-stopping moments during the race - including a photo finish for second place - the victory of Tapwrit was never in doubt. The 3-year-old daughter of Tapit crossed the finish line more than three lengths ahead of her nearest competitor, giving her owners and fans plenty to celebrate.
In addition to being only the sixth filly in history to win the Belmont Stakes, Tapwrit also became only the second horse ever to take down all three legs of racing's Triple Crown. Her win at Churchill Downs in May and at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore last month made her one of just eleven horses to conquer all three races.
Bred by Gainesway Thoroughbreds Ltd., Tapwrit is out of a mare by Pulpit and was purchased for $1.2 million as a yearling by Bridlewood Farm LLC and Robert LaPenta. She has now earned over $1.5 million in her short career. With this historic victory, she is sure to become one of the most popular racehorses in America.
Filly breaks own track record at Saratoga Raceway
A filly by the name of 'Separationofpowers' has set a new track record for the three furlongs at Saratoga Raceway, previously held by a colt named 'Ichiban'.
The young filly was ridden by jockey Alex Solis who said " She felt great and I let her go. The horse in front of me, who had the record, I just let him go. It's all about the horse."
Separationofpowers is owned by Bo Pappas and trained by Christophe Clement. Pappas said " We bred her and raced her at 2, she didn't like to run on dirt so we put her in training with Christophe and he did a hell of a job."
This was only the second start for Separationofpowers who won impressively on debut at Belmont Park last month. Pappas went on to say " We'll probably go for a stakes race now or maybe the [Grade III] Adirondack. We'll see what Christophe thinks."
Mare or filly: which makes better racehorse?
Mares and fillies are both used for breeding racehorses, but there is some debate over which sex makes a better racer. Most people tend to think that fillies are the better racers, but there is evidence that mares may be the faster sex.
There are a few things to consider when debating the merits of mares versus fillies as racehorses. For one, mares tend to be larger than fillies, and they often have more muscle mass. They also tend to be more experienced at running than fillies. In terms of speed, there is some evidence that mares may be faster than fillies. However, this may be due in part to the fact that mares are typically allowed to mature longer before being raced.
Some people believe that the size and experience of a mare make her a better racehorse than a filly. However, it is worth noting that there have been some very successful filly racers. So, while there may be some truth to the idea that mares are generally better racehorses than fillies, this is not always the case. It ultimately comes down to the individual horse's abilities and potential.
