Kentucky Derby Hopeful Filly Gives Birth to Triplets
Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, woke up to some surprising news on Tuesday morning. A hopeful filly who was scheduled to run in next weekend's Derby gave birth to triplets.
According to a statement released by the track, all of the foals were delivered healthy and are doing well. The filly, who is unnamed at this point, is also doing well and is being monitored by the Churchill Downs team.
It's still unclear what this means for the Kentucky Derby, as there have been no declarations made yet by the filly's owner or trainer. However, it's likely that this will push one of the other horses scheduled to run in the derby into that spot. Over 20 horses have already declared their intent to run in next week's race.
This isn't the first time a horse has given birth shortly before running in the Kentucky Derby. In fact, it happens fairly often. In 2006, Trainer Todd Pletcher had two horses give birth shortly before running in the derby - one just two days before the race. Both horses ran and finished well.
The Kentucky Derby is always an exciting event, but with a possible Triple Crown contender running in next week's race, it's sure to be even more exciting than usual!
Filly Jockey Wins First Race at Age 14
Lillie Naylor never even sat on a horse before she tried her hand at racing. That didn't stop the then-14-year-old girl from winning her first race.
Naylor had always been around horses, thanks to her father's passion for the animals. She would often help him feed and care for the horses at their farm in Maryland. So when her friends suggested she try out jockey school, she was up for the challenge.
It turned out that Naylor was a natural. After just a few months of training, she was ready to race. And on May 5, 2019, she made history by becoming the youngest person ever to win a race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
"It feels amazing," Naylor said after her win. "I worked so hard for this and I'm just so happy that it all paid off."
Despite her young age, Naylor is no stranger to competition. She started riding horses at age 7 and has been involved in equestrian competitions ever since. In fact, she's won numerous awards and accolades, including first place at the prestigious North American Young Riders Championship last year.
Naylor is currently homeschooled so that she can continue to focus on her riding career. She plans to compete in more races this year, with the goal of eventually qualifying for the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
Record-Breaking Filly Gets Sold for $8 Million
The horse racing world was abuzz Tuesday when news broke that a 3-year-old filly had been sold at auction for a staggering $8 million.
The unnamed filly, who is undefeated in six races, was bought by an anonymous buyer at the Fasig-Tipton sale in Lexington, Kentucky.
"It's a fantastic day for racing," said Keeneland president Bill Thomason. "This filly has demonstrated she is one of the best in the world."
The previous record for a North American racehorse sale was set in 2007 when an Arabian stallion named Machmer Hall was sold for $7 million.
The new owner of the filly has not yet been revealed, but is expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
Filly Saves Owner's Life in Freak Accident
Normally a horse is a calming influence, but when Amber leaned down to pet her one morning, she felt a sudden jolt and heard a loud crash. Her horse, Filly, had kicked her in the head with her back hoof.
Amber was knocked unconscious and lay bleeding on the ground. Luckily, Filly stood by her side until help arrived. Paramedics were able to revive Amber and rushed her to the hospital. She had a concussion and several broken bones, but she would have died if Filly hadn't acted so quickly.
"Filly saved my life," Amber says gratefully. "I owe her everything." Now Amber and Filly are inseparable, and everyone who meets them agrees that this unlikely duo is a force to be reckoned with.
Horse-Loving Filly Retires After a Record-Breaking Career
Charlotte, the horse-loving filly, announced her retirement today after a long and successful career. This record-breaking filly has accomplished more than most horses ever will.
Charlotte was born in a small town in Kentucky. She showed an early interest in horses and loved to watch them run. When she was just six years old, she began her riding lessons. Her instructors quickly recognized her talent and passion for horses.
At age twelve, Charlotte entered her first race. She easily won, and she was hooked. From then on, she dedicated herself to becoming the best racehorse possible. She trained hard and raced even harder.
Over the next several years, Charlotte broke several records. She became the fastest filly in history, the youngest jockey to win a major stakes race, and the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby.
Now at age nineteen, Charlotte has decided it's time to retire. "I've had an amazing career, but it's time for me to move on to new things," she said in a statement released by her owner today. "I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my life – my trainers, my jockeys, my fans – you have all made my dreams come true. I can't wait to see what the future holds!"
